Scribe
I've created a machine, a portable drawing device that can be navigated through the city and used to create perfect circles. It is pulled behind me, flipped over and then used as a gurney/compass to mark the site I am identifying. The device carries the tools necessary to impact any surface I may encounter: cement is scrubbed with water, dirt is brushed, mud is scratched and grass is clipped. An articulated, adjustable sighting device and guide keeps the circles consistent and sets a visual standard for these citywide "drawings". These interventions are temporary, reversible and cause no permanent damage.
Through these performative interventions, I'm able to heighten the awareness of the shared spaces we all unconsciously navigate and leave a temporal, drawn monument at points of civic community and public traffic. I perform "Scribe" for eight hour shifts to address the status and efficacy of the artist as worker and producer.
